Lighting Guide

KITCHEN

Sconce

Fixture should hang 60” from floor or 24” from counter to bottom of fixture.

For above a window or open shelf,  the top of the window frame or shelf should be around 6” from the bottom of the fixture’s canopy.

Pendant

For over counter/island or table - fixture should have a minimum clearance of 30-36” between the bottom of the fixture and the top of the counter/table.

Smaller Islands (4-5’ long) - recommend using 1 large or 2 medium sized fixtures.

Larger Islands - recommend using 3 medium or 2 larger sized fixtures.

If multiple pendants - space between fixtures should be approximately at least 24”.

Allow at least 6” from edge of counter or table to the light fixture on each side.

 

DINING
Pendant & Chandelier 

There should be a minimum of 7’ from the bottom of the fixture to the floor.

Chandelier/Pendant Width - fixtures should be ½ - ¾ the width of dining table.

Minimum clearance of 30-36” from bottom of fixture and top of dining table.

Fixtures with taller overall height may be better for rooms with high ceilings - Add approximately 3” of height and/or width for every additional foot in room height.

Traditionally more formal dining rooms have lower hanging lights.

 

BATHROOM

Sconce

Place sconce 60” - 65” from ground to backplate or just above eye level to prevent unflattering shadows.

Sconces should be about 36”-40” apart.

Linear sconce - light should be ¾ width size of mirror.

*Please keep in mind that these are just the standard measurements. Use them as a starting point and feel free to adjust them to fit your space.

Pendant

There should be a minimum of 7’ from the bottom of the fixture to the floor, 8’ if it’s over a bathtub.

Fixtures with taller overall height may be better for rooms with high ceilings - Add approximately 3” for every additional foot.

 

LIVING/GREAT ROOM

Pendant & Chandelier 

There should be a minimum of 7’ from the bottom of the fixture to the floor.

Fixtures with taller overall height may be better for rooms with high ceilings - Add approximately 3” to light fixture for every additional foot.

* If it’s a primary light source, you’ll want about 100 lumens per square yard.

Sconce

Leave minimum of 6” from door frame and edge of fixture.

Hang above eye level - approximately 60” - 72” from floor to center of junction box.

For Vaulted Ceilings - approximately 66” - 72” from floor.

 

BEDROOM

Sconce

Center sconce to bedside table  and approximately 30” - 36” above top of mattress.

Pendant/Chandelier

There should be a minimum of 7’ from the bottom of the fixture to the floor.

Fixtures with taller overall height may be better for rooms with high ceilings - Add approximately 3” for every additional foot.

 

ENTRY, HALL & STAIRWAY

Chandelier/Pendant

There should be a minimum of 7’ from the bottom of the fixture to the floor.

Fixtures with taller overall height may be better for rooms with high ceilings - Add approximately 3” for every additional foot.

Sconce

Leave minimum of 6” from door frame and edge of fixture.

Hang above eye level - approximately 60” - 72” from floor to center of junction box.

For Vaulted Ceilings - approximately 66” - 72”.

Best to keep sconces in hallway 8’ - 10’ apart.

 

 

OUTDOOR

Sconce

Fixture should be at eye-level or 60” - 65” from ground to center of sconce.

Two sconces should be ¼ of the height of the door.

One sconce should be the height of the door.

Lantern/Pendant 

Fixture should be the height of the door.

Bottom edge of fixture should hang just above the door trim.
